Comprehensive Storm Damage Inspections
Signs of hail damage to an asphalt shingle roof are not always obvious to the casual observer. Even small hailstones of less than an inch can result in significant damage, but finding the damage may require the eye of a trained roofing contractor. When hailstones are one to two inches in size, you almost certainly have a ruined roof that requires quick repair or replacement. Here are some signs we will look for:
- Dark spots on shingles. Asphalt shingles are composed of a fiberglass or organic mat that is covered in asphalt and coated with ceramic granules to add color and protect from UV rays. Dark spots are the result of hail hitting the shingle and dislodging the granules, which shortens the life of the shingle.
- Bruising. Hailstone impact may leave a hidden indentation in a shingle, resulting in a bruised area that weakens the shingle and speeds deterioration.
- Cracking. Larger hailstones can cause a circular crack at the site of impact, which indicates damage that extends through the shingle mat. This severe damage leaves a shingle vulnerable to water leaks and necessitates immediate replacement.
- Dented metal. The soft metal components of a roof, such as flashing and vents, can also indicate hail damage and its severity.
